They say that what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger,I feel stronger especially after that loong drive, getting pulled over by state troopers 3 times in the middle of the night before reaching El Paso, getting a speeding ticket and 2 warnings before crashing to sleeep at 7 am at a Motel6 and the kids waking up basically as soon as we brought everything in the room. Angie got Happy Meals all along the way so the kids were happy,so it all ended on a happy note by arriving to the end of our long drive; through the clean, sandy, cactus-filled apache warrior land.
We watched “History of Texas” at the IMAX and ate delicious food at the Hickory street bar and grill ,such great food, then on to Capitol Hill. There were some kids hunting for easter eggs, lessi found one and opened it and it was full of chocolates.
After 15 and 1/2 hours of driving we arrived in Laredo, then after a few more to Austin the next day.So far so good.Next destination; California.

On one of my days out witnessing, my partner and I were on our way to a far away spot, which was taking a long time to get there where all the people from that
area in that concentric circle are friendly friends nice enough to buy lots of books and CD’s ,and that is why we keep going back there. As we are driving down that road once again, I decide to stop to get a Café Latte which tends to be the norm for me nowadays at the Italian Coffee Company, but I get it on the drive through and with lots of difficulty am trying to get the sugar in the cup and stirring it and driving the standard transmission and changing songs on my PDA all at the same time, driving in lots of traffic. Then I see Federal Highway Car driving in the other direction,I think nothing of it; a few minutes later the same 2008 Dodge Charger Police car honks right behind me and it sounds like an Ocean Liner and I nearly get a heart attack and spill Caffe Latte over the floor mat. So I pull over and they strut over to our car like the muy machin, macho poliziotto that they are and they ask me where I was heading and before I could answer they say “please give me your license and Permit to drive in this countryâ€?, with their pompous air to them as superior police that they are to any other police in the area.
I calmly hand over my license and they talk to me in a threatening tone of voice to please step out of the vehicle and open the trunk while the other officer bangs the trunk with his hands. While they try to rattle me and make me nervous with some silly comment about my tinted windows being illegal, I am totally ignoring their efforts to intimidate me .All I could think about is my coffee half of it being half gone, I am half annoyed with them and myself by now, my coffee is spilled on the floor of my car, I paid 16 pesos for that darn coffee, my floor mat is full of coffee .I take the floor mat and empty it out and by now they are just silently watching and waiting to see any signs of weakness to pounce on. Then I proceed to open the trunk and they ask me where I am headed and what I do for a living, I tell them I do volunteer missionary work and they find the box in the trunk full of books about God on God and from Jesus with Love and they ask, what religion I am , what I intend to do with all that stuff and what is the purpose for having them and if they are worth anything. I calmly explain it all to them that they aren’t worth much in the physical but spiritually are worth a lot and enhance people’s communion with God,and we use them to help people have a better link with Jesus, and that we are an ecumenical group and we work equally with all faiths; the standard answer I give to the powers that be which is often, them not knowing that I have faced corrupt police in Mexico trying to find any reason to hassle me for a bribe many times. They ask which city in Texas I’m from and when I will be going back and I say Austin and in 3 weeks I will be going back ,which is true, I smile knowing they’ve got nothing on me. They look at each other,by then they calmed down, they have this guilty look on their face , and say ;well, I guess you can go and have a nice day and keep up the good work. I say thanks and Igualmente. Sweet! I drove off, and then 2 days later I remembered I forgot my floor mat there on the ground, never to find it again.
It’s all in a day’s work.
We climbed the Malinche Mountain yesterday for Family day,the wives and the kids stayed back at a nice picnic and recreational area at the bottom of the mountain while the men and the boys climbed. We had a guide to show us the best path.It was a 3 and 1/2 hour climb(which was fast compared to the usual 4 and 1/2 hours people normally take to climb it) and around 2 hours going back down. We started with 7 of us but only three of us made it to the top. It’s the 5th highest mountain in Mexico,at 4461 Meters there was ice and strong winds and we also got quite sunburned.Troy almost made it to the top with only like 45 minutes left to the top,not bad for a 8 year old kid,Anthony (10) got tired right almost away so he went back with Julie, while Jono and Troy persisted quite well and saw a coyote and a mountain goat. There were some scary precipices to go through especially with the strong cold wind which knocked you off balance, but we made it.On the way down there were sandy area where the mountain springs usually flowed but were dry so we used them as paths on the way down and Jonathan and I ran down those paths, the sand cushioned our steps and allowed us to go down quite fast almost like sledding/snowboarding or something to that effect.
